Protecting Your Pup: Firework Safety Tips from a Realtor and Dog Lover
With summer in full swing, it's the time of year when fireworks are lighting up the sky and bringing excitement to family celebrations. However, for our furry friends, fireworks can be a source of stress and anxiety.
As a volunteer with Missing Dogs MA, I’ve seen firsthand how terrifying situations can unfold when a dog gets scared and bolts during fireworks. It’s an issue that’s close to my heart, and as a realtor, I want to share some tips on how to keep your four-legged friends safe during this noisy season.
1. Create a Safe Space at Home
Fireworks can send even the calmest dog into a panic. Dogs are often more sensitive to loud noises than we realize, and the sudden booms and flashes of light can trigger fearful behavior. One of the simplest ways to protect your dog is by creating a safe, quiet space where they can retreat during fireworks displays. This could be a room with no windows or a cozy corner with their favorite bed and toys. If possible, keep the lights dim and play music or a sound machine to drown out the noise.
2. Keep Them Indoors
Fireworks can send even the most well-trained pets into a flight response. Keeping your dog indoors during firework displays is essential. Make sure all windows, doors, and gates are securely closed, as scared dogs might try to escape in search of a safe place.
3. Consider Calming Products
There are many products designed to help calm anxious dogs, such as calming collars, anxiety wraps, or even natural remedies like CBD oil (consult with your vet beforehand). Some dogs may benefit from pheromone diffusers like Adaptil, which emit a scent that mimics the calming pheromones released by a mother dog.
4. Ensure Proper Identification
If your dog does get startled and runs off, it’s important that they are properly identified. A collar with an ID tag is a must, and I highly recommend ensuring your pet is microchipped. If they’re already microchipped, take a moment to check that your contact information is up-to-date in the database. This can make a huge difference in reuniting lost pets with their families.
5. Stay Calm and Be Patient
Dogs often pick up on our energy, so it’s important to stay calm when they are anxious. Try not to reinforce fear by becoming overly protective. They’ll take their cue from you, so keeping a calm and reassuring presence can help them feel more secure.
6. Spread Awareness and Help Prevent Lost Dogs
As a volunteer with Missing Dogs MA, I’ve seen many dogs go missing during fireworks displays. If you know your neighbors have dogs or you see unfamiliar dogs out during fireworks, take a moment to check on them. If you see a dog who seems lost, don’t hesitate to call your local animal control or a rescue organization for help. Do not chase a loose dog as it can drive them further away.
7. Take Extra Precautions with Senior Dogs
Senior dogs, in particular, can be more sensitive to changes in their environment, including loud noises. Make sure they have a comfortable space to rest and that they’re not put under unnecessary stress. Sometimes, a little extra attention and care can go a long way in helping them feel secure during fireworks.
